A Month Of Gentlemen // Aeropress ft. Notch Coffee

Our good friend Devin of Notch Coffee was able to help us out with this at home brewing tutorial using (our favourite) the Aeropress brewing system.

Here's what you'll need:

Delicious Coffee (Whole Bean)((More on this later))

  • An Aeropress, with paper filters
  • A burr grinder
  • A scale
  • A decanting vessel
  • Hot water kettle
  • A timer
  • Something to stir with
  • Your favorite cup
  • Optional: A thermometer

Measure out between 20 and 21 grams of coffee (We used 20.5 grams for this specific coffee, adjust within this range, based on taste) Make sure to rinse your paper filter before hand to rinse out any fine paper particles. Dispose of the rinsing water.

Grind away.

The ground coffee should look like fine sea salt. However, you may need to make fine adjustments to this, based on what you taste.

Add the coffee to the Aeropress and tare your scale. The best temperature for brewing coffee is between 200 - 205 Fahrenheit. You can measure this with a simple kitchen thermometer. If you don't have one, simply bring your water to just before a boil, take it off the heat and let stand for a minute.

Start your timer when you add the water, and fill the Aeropress to the top. Stir well for 10 seconds. Some coffee dripping through the filter is normal, don't worry. At around 40 seconds, top up with water for a total volume of 300 grams. Stir again for 10 seconds. Place the top piece on the Aeropress, This creates a vacuum and stops any more coffee from dripping through the filter. At 1 minute 45 seconds, push the coffee down through the filter, and you're done! :)

Serve it up..

.. and Enjoy!

It's important to get your coffee from a roaster that you love! When it's possible, support a local roaster. Every company has a different roasting style. We love roasters that focus on sweet, bright and clean coffees. Get to know what style you like and pick a roaster that suits your taste.  Your coffee should have a roast date on the bag, that's no more than 2 months old. Experiment with trying new coffees from different countries and regions. Try making up your own tasting notes and impressing your friends with them! :)
