Show & Tell // Old Faithful Shop // Part II

We had another Show & Tell sponsored by Old Faithful Shop a couple weeks ago, where we first told you about this amazing gem in Gastown, Vancouver. We received and email from a reader so excited to go check out this awesome store, so we thought we would share a few more favourites from the shop! Not from Vancouver? Check them out online.

Bethany // As a sucker for anything with fur, especially my puppy Sid, I love cute pet accessories! I actually bought some thick rope and a hook to make a leash like this a while back but it's a bit harder than you may think when you have a 100 pound beast that it has to restrain. But, this leash is perfect! I love the simple black rope, and gold details. So sleek.

I love these vintage style lightbulbs! They can be hard to find, but Old Faithful has a great selection of a few different styles! We have a few of these hanging in our living room, one of the many projects in our apartment was installing a dimmer in our living room and hanging some of these with yellow-yarn-wrapped cord, it looks soo much better than the ugly white globe light that was there before! These bulbs give off a nice dim glow too, perfect ambiance!

Every time i go into Old Faithful, the chocolate bars always draw me in. The packaging is adorable and it really is amazing chocolate. This bar is Dark Chocolate & Chilli Peppers, really unique spicy flavour. YUM.

Mmm Monday // Gluten, Dairy & Sugar Free Brownies

We swear by these brownies! Our moms friend gave us this recipe a few weeks ago and they really do live up to the expectations they were given! These are sugar free, gluten free, wheat free, and dairy free! dang! and they are AMAZING! (Unfortunately for Bethany they aren't nut free!) They're super quick and easy to make and let me tell you, I (tegan) made these for some friends last week and they were devoured!! I sprinkled some coconut over to of them and it was deeee-lightful!

- 1/4 Tsp. Sea Salt
- 1/2 Tsp. Baking Soda
- 1 Cup Almond Flour (almond meal - trader joe's)
- 1/4 C Cocoa Powder
- 2 Large Eggs
- 1/2 C Smooth Almond Butter
- 3 Tbsp Honey
- 2 Tsp. Pure Vanilla
- 2 Tbsp. Melted Coconut Oil (or preferred oil)
- 1/4 C Dairy Free Chocolate Chips (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
2. Line and grease an 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 in pan with foil and set aside.
3. Add the almond flour, soda, salt, and cocoa powder to the bowl of a food processor and process until all the dry ingredients are well blended.
4. Add the dates, eggs, almond butter, honey, and coconut oil. Process until well blended, scraping down the bowl as necessary.
5. Pulse in the chocolate chips.
6. Pour batter into prepared pan.

7. Bake 25 - 35 minutes. Check at 20 minutes as all ovens are different and everyone likes their brownies baked differently.

8. Stuff your face, or not. Enjoy.

Something New: I got bangs this week! I've been planning it for a while and I finally did it, I made it a whole year and a half (a record for sure). New hair is fun!
Something Inspiring: ummm going to New York on Tuesday with 2 of my best friends? This is new! I Haven't really been before (other than a few hours with my husbands band, doesn't really count though) This feels like a whole new adventure and I am so excited. Going on trips with friends is something I haven't really done much of and I can't wait. We're exited to tourist it up a bit too, any things we need to see??
Something Disturbing: I bought this delicious chipotle mayo and it is soooo good. I've eaten a lot of it, too much. I bought it for sandwiches and then I tried it with pizza...then wings....mmm
Something I'm Listening To: This week I finally got to see my good friends Dear Rouge play! I am a big fan of these people, Dan and I have gotten to know and hang out lots with Drew and Danielle over the past few months and it was so good to see them perform, needless to say I've been crankin' their music ever since Tuesday night and cannot wait for their new songs to come out because they are sooooo good.

Something New:

I got back from a quick trip to Arizona with my mom and sister yesterday. It was so nice to go spend sometime in the heat! It was 42 degrees everyday, and I loovvveee it. We just spent most of our days laying by the pool, and going out for food. It was a bit of a bummer waking up this morning to Vancouver rain.

Something Inspiring: In FOUR DAYS we will be in New York together. So excited, and just knowing that we are going to Alt Summit has been inspiring for us to "get our act together" with the blog and business in all aspects. Can't wait for how inspired we will be when we leave.
Something Disturbing: Last week was National Donut Day. Lets just say, I celebrated.
Something I'm Listening To: Citizens new(ish) self titled album is always on repeat in my car. I loovveee it.

Something New: Kalos has lots of big plans for the summer, it is always our favorite time for our business because of all the fun things we get to do. We are leaving for New York in 3 days for our Alt Summit blogging convention! We are also planning a very exciting party for the beginning of July! (We'll keep you posted!) We are also starting to prep for Folk Fest mid July! If you are in Vancouver this summer, please look out for these plans for we would LOVE to meet you and share some fun summer times!
Something Inspiring: I have been listening to some of our demo's from my band and I am feeling super blessed to be making music with such talented boys. The way they write is very inspiring and I am always blown away by the adventures & tales told in each song. I am excited to release new music with them and tour in the summer!
Something Disturbing: Oh man. My poor poor phone has taken a harsh beating. I was dancing at a show the other night (Tegan's husband played in a Cake cover band called "FAKE") and my phone flew out of my backpack pocket and hit the ground. The whole front of my phone is shattered, but it still works! I just need to be careful not to cut my face and fingers up.... My phone has been a real trooper. I have had it for 2 years and during that time it has survived falling in the toilet, falling off a 3 story boat and sliding to the back near the edge almost falling in the water, it was saturated in bubble solution when I accidentally dropped a huge bucket full of it in my friend Elaine's car last fall... and now this. I feel quite proud of it being able to withstand my clumsy adventures.

Something I'm Listening To: My friend Mike Edel played a show at the Media Club last night. He is such a talented musician, and puts on a really great show. Definitely check out his tunes, great for summer days kickin it in the park.

Show & Tell // Much & Little

These are insanely amazing. They are so, so very cozy, I was so excited to put them on. Plus the packaging is adorable! These slippers are fair-trade, handmade in Chile and are so comfy.

I loooove this leather and waxed canvas backpack! They are locally made and come in a bunch of different colours! You can feel the quality and they're the perfect mix of casual, cute and practical!

Bethany // How cool is this beach towel? Way cooler than my LaSenza Girl towel from middle school. Love the aztec print, and its ginormous which makes me so happy when I'm freezing cold running out of the water.

Mmm Monday // Chocolate Hazelnut Spread

What you will need:

2 Cups Hazelnuts

1 Cup Dark Melted Chocolate

2 Tbs Cocoa Powder

2 Tbs Cooking Oil

4 Tbs Icing Sugar

1/3 Cup Coconut Milk

Preheat the oven to 350F. Spread Hazelnuts on a baking sheet and bake for 8 minutes. When done, shell the hazelnuts and place in the food processor or blender, blend for about 10-15 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and continue to blend until you get a smooth 'Nutella' like consistency. If you have trouble getting it "spreadable" add more Coconut Milk as needed.

Something New // This week I went to Trader Joes and bought unsweetened apple sauce for baking. Ended up eating it by the spoonful while I was at work one day and was SO surprised at how amazing it is. People kept making fun of me for being a baby, or a child.. I'm sure we all grew up eating different flavored apple sauce from those plastic containers with the tinfoil lids. ANYWAY. It is amazing with cinnamon or in oatmeal! Anyone have any suggestions on what else apple sauce is amazing on??

Something Inspiring // Ditto to what Tegan said. This week was my first time ever biking around the whole seawall! My Dad was so excited to walk Stanley park again as soon as he found out it was rated the 2nd most beautiful park in the world. It's funny the things you forget to see and appreciate, when it is right around the corner from you. It is incredibly beautiful and I am so excited to bike it WAY more often. I can't even imagine how glorious it will be listening to Sufjan Stevens Age of Adz and biking that seawall, I might die of joy.

Something Disturbing // I was in the kitchen cleaning the dishes, and smelled pot. Immediately my roommates and I run to the vents because we assume its our basement/karaoke/party men, but then we quickly realized it was skunk. We were lead to the front door and a skunk had sprayed right on our porch! I am pretty sure they live under our house. Our porch and house stunk for DAYS.

Something I'm Listening To // This week I have been searching for bands to tour with across the states, and I came across this band from LA called Hi Ho Silver Oh and I became a huge fan! Listening to it a lot.

Something New: I have been biking a lot this week! It all started Sunday afternoon when I joined Lindsay and my parentals for a walk around Stanley Park and it inspired me! Monday morning Dan and I took our bikes down and rode the Sea Wall (my first time ever, I know, crazy). It was so sunny, so nice, stopped halfway and dug our toes in the sand and relaxed in the sun! Yesterday was my third time back at the beach, and well, my butt hurts from so much biking but that's ok, also, my bike is just a single gear so it's a really great work out when there's any sort of hill, but my body is loving me for it.

Something Inspiring: I don't want to talk about biking again, but I will. I feel so inspired when I'm on my bicycle, riding along the water, sun shining, I have so much time to think and just slow down. I hadn't ridden in a few years but I finally got my lovely yellow bike from my parents house to my apartment for the summer and can't wait to ride it everyday.

Something Disturbing // I am just going to be honest here, I have had a bit of a hard week, I have been looking for a job for months, when I woke up on June 1, I cried, I could not get out of bed, thankfully I have an amazing, encouraging husband who helps me see things clearly, but it is a bit disturbing that it's already JUNE and I'm not working! Ack. I'll find one.

Something I'm Listening To: Spice World. The CD has been in our car this week and I can't help but to car dance, roll down the windows and sing along to "Never Give Up On The Good Times." Do it, I promise it will brighten your day!

Something New: My husbands band, We Are The City, released their new album, Violent, this week. From hearing the demos of these songs so long ago, to hearing everything done and put together I'm so proud of these guys for making such an amazing record. They are also featured on iTunes "Free Single of the Week", pretty awesome! So head to iTunes and get your free song!

Something Inspiring: I started re-reading the book; Through Painted Deserts by Donald Miller this week. I don't read very often but I've felt tired lately and it's been just a nice way to relax in the sun. I really love all of Donald Miller's books. I highly recommend "Blue Like Jazz" I haven't read it in years, but It still inspires me.

Something Disturbing: I found out there are 8 seasons of Keeping up with the Kardashians (I know I'm behind), not just the 4 on Netflix. enough said.

Something I'm Listening to: I downloaded the Beyonce album, 4. It's very out of character for me but I've been craving some R&B lately. Lots of Beyonce, Kanye, and Rihanna happening around here.

Whatcha Wearing Wednesday // Much & Little Boutique

Much & Little is an adorable boutique on Main St. in Vancouver. Filled with amazing clothes, and shoes we were absolutely drooling over. Household goods that have a perfect vintage feel, the coolest beach towels (I know, you didn't even know that existed), and such a friendly and welcoming vibe. It's located just up from Main & Broadway, so be sure to stop by there, like them on facebook, and check out their site here.

Show & Tell

Old Faithful Shop is a really cool shop in Gastown, Vancouver. It's filled with good quality back to basic goods. Lot's of unique kitchen accessories, vintage light bulbs, books, toiletries. The type of things you know will last a long a time, full of character. I don't know anyone who has walked in there and not swooned over every single thing. If you're in Vancouver it is a must visit!

Lindsay // I absolutely love this book. I was drawn to it because of its resemblance to my favorite childhood book "Green Eggs and Ham." There are so many good recipes and the drawings are so beautiful!

Tegan // I love trying new syrups and sweeteners in my coffee. French press is my favorite way to drink a nice big cup of joe, and this syrup is so good with it. I finally watched the documentary "Food Inc." last night, so I especially love that there are no artificial sweeteners or dyes, and no high fructose corn syrup! If you haven't seen that documentary, do it, it was very, very informative!

Bethany // Look at this bread board, how cool?! I will forever be finding cute things to add to my kitchen, it's one of the rooms I spend most of my time in, so why not. When I saw this Old Faithful Shop Board I fell in love. You can buy one online here.

Mmmmonday // Avocado Basil Dressing

I pinned this recipe on pinterest a few weeks ago and couldn't wait to try it out! The famous green goddess dressing that keeps showing up on your feed, you know the one. Let me tell you it came through! It is delicious!! I cooked some noodles and dumped a bunch over pasta, and tried it as a salad dressing as well which was super good, especially with something sweet (Strawberries, craisins, cherry tomatoes). I haven't tried it but I know it would be delicious inside of my favourite sweet-potatoe chickpea burgers, because it is very much like a creamy avocado pesto!

I used my hand blender for this, first i mixed the garlic, oil, water, and avacado, once that was smooth I added the herbs. once that was blended I added the lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, cayenne, salt, and agave. Store it in a tightly sealed jar for up to 5 days! Slop it, dip it, top it... enjoy.

- 1 garlic clove
- 2 avacados
- 7-8 tbsp water
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 5 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 3-4 tbsp fresh lemon juice, to taste
- 1/2 cup packed fresh basil leaves
- 1/2 cup packed fresh parsley
- 1/2 cup packed green onion (dark green part only, not white)
- 5 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 3-4 tbsp fresh lemon juice, to taste
- 1 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
- Pinch of cayenne (optional)
- Sweetener, to taste (I used 1/2 tsp agave)

Something New: I bought heals for the first time in....years! I think the last time I wore heals was to Bethany's wedding! CRAZY! I had a really fun time shopping in the states yesterday with my mom and Linds for some NY shoes and bought some VERY high heals, I'm really excited to wear them! Also, I bought runners! Haven't bought those in...well even longer than the last time I bought heals.

Something Inspiring: Philippians 4:7 "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." I've repeated this in my head a lot this last week, I've needed a lot of help feeling His peace lately, and let's just say the peace of God really does surpass all understanding!

Something Disturbing: Oh man, I lied, the last time I bought runners was in Australia, this is embarrassing, Dan and I both bought new runners the first week we got to Australia with great plans to go running all the time, let's just say they were very, very white when we gave them to the thrift store before we came back home, so sad.

Something I'm Listening To: I've been listening to Maclean "Talker" all week. If you haven't heard them, this is definitely worth a listen!

Something new// The boys in my band and I are booking shows for our upcoming tour! It is creeping up so fast and I am getting very excited. I love tour so much and feel very blessed to travel with my friends and play music & meet more friends along the way. We are touring Vancouver Island, and across to Alberta, as well as a Western US tour.

Something inspiring// I snatched last minute Sigur Ros tickets this week to their show in Vancouver (jealous of all who went to Sasquatch this past weekend.. it sounded AMAZING). The show was unreal.. so much talent, so much magic. It started to rain throughout the set which made it rather dramatic. There were also girls in the back of the stage wearing velvet dresses playing the horns. I was extremely inspired to buy a velvet dress.. and to pick up my french horn and take some lessons. Although, I know that will most likely mean me sitting in front of my computer playing along to free french horn youtube lessons, while my roomies listen (/laugh) from downstairs.

Something disturbing// This week Tegan and I worked at the Mumford and Sons show selling beer! It was a great deal, especially to see M&S for free! Although...... Tegan was put in a booth with a bunch of our friends, and they assigned me to a separate booth. I walked over to a table full of 10 burly, restaurant bartender dooods. Now, I know I shouldn't be complaining, but it's one thing to receive beer from a burly bartender.. than to be standing next to him YELLING out orders to the other doods standing behind me. It was outrageous. Me and the bros. I could barely yell, but they wouldn't take my order unless I screamed it at them. My voice was shot by the end of the night.. It ended up being a hilarious time, but BOY was I out of my comfort zone.

Something I'm listening to// Noah Gundersen. Such a beautiful raspy voice for such a young guy. Give him a listen!

Something New // I coloured my hair black! I've always had darker hair, and having the light ombre was fun but I started to miss being dark. Change is always a little shocking at first, but I'm getting used to it. Feels good to be back to my roots (but not literally).

Something Inspiring // We are going to start posting some tutorial videos on the blog. I'm inspired by creative people that include all aspects of media in there blogs, or business. So we're branching out to a new side.

Something Disturbing // How many episodes of The Office I have watched this week. I don't even want to tell you... But I will. 3 seasons. shame. I've started getting really invested in Jim & Pam's relationship, I've seen these episodes so many times, but I get teary everytime he asks he out on their first date.

Something I'm listening to // I actually haven't been listening to anything new this week.. (I haven't actually had time with all this office watching haha) Any suggestions for me?

Homemade // Vegan Mayo & Ketchup

I'm not going to lie to you. This vegan mayo doesn't exactly taste like mayo, BUT that doesn't mean it wasn't a great substitute. It's a great dip for fries, spread in a sandwich, or starter for aioli. It's also super easy, and you don't have to worry about weird chemicals going in there.

You will need:

325g Silken Tofu

Juice from half a lemon

1 tsp apple cider vinegar

1 and 1/2 tsp sugar

Salt & Pepper to taste

Put all the ingredients in a blender. Then let sit in cheese cloth for about an hour. Thats it!

The Ketchup tasted... Like Ketchup! But Healthy. It also was super easy.
6 oz Tomato Paste

1/4 cup honey

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/4 cup water

1 tsp sugar

3/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp onion powder

1 clove minced garlic

Combine all ingredients in a large sauce pan (use large because it splatters) put over medium heat and whisk until it comes to a boil. Then cover and allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Once chilled, serve. Store in the fridge.

Tegan // I found a few old books from the thrift store down the road, and love the prints in this old book all about sea shells! I ripped a bunch of them out, because the book was already fallen apart, and hung them on my bedroom wall!

Bethany // I got this longboard a couple weeks ago when David won at poker night. It's been so much fun for David and I to both have our own now, so we can spend sunny evenings riding together. Our Criteria when looking for a board was, cheapest, haha. We ended up finding this one at the Boardroom Clearance Store in Vancouver

Lindsay // I got these amazing smelling cedar incense at Old Faithful Shop in Gastown, Vancouver. They smell so wonderful and fill up a room quickly making it smell like your out in a cozy cabin in the woods!

Mmm Monday // Melon Cream Popsicles

These popsicles were delicious!! Have you ever had Melona brand popsicles? They are amazing. So we wanted to try making something similar, and it turned out great! They are fruity and creamy, and look at that cute color ;)

You will need:

1 Honeydew - Cubed

1/3 Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk*

Popsicle Mold

1. Put melon and milk in a blender until fully blended.

2. Pour into popsicle mold, and freeze.

That all! Easy Peezy! Wait for them to freeze, Approx. 4 Hours, and ENJOY!

*We were enjoying these last night and thought it might be good subbing unsweetened condensed milk, or even coconut milk! and then some agave or honey for a natural sweetener, with the sweetened condensed milk they get pretty rich by the end! Let us know if you try these with any alternatives!

Something Inspiring: Like Tegan Said, people have been so encouraging lately. Thank you to everyone who has taken a couple of minutes to make us smile, it gives us that motivation to keep doing what we're doing! If you appreciate something someone does make sure you take the time to let them know. It means a lot :)

Something New: The blog! Yahooo. I've been working on the new design for actually a couple of months now. There were a few "technical set backs" so once it was finally ready to launch I was pretty excited. Also stoked about the new font we have for you download (check it out on the sidebar) There will be more to come!

Something Disturbing: Th Oklahoma tornado. I can't even imagine what it would be like to have everything you own destroyed in seconds. I found this awesome video of a dog being found in the debris.. watch it here

Something I'm Listening To: The new She & Him Album, I think Tegan was talking about this last week. But I just downloaded it and it's really great, It's been on repeat in my house all day long!

Something Inspiring: I've been completely overwhelmed and inspired by all the kind comments we've gotten in the last few days! We appreciate them so much, we will usually message each other if we get a really nice email to make sure we all read it because it is so encouraging to us! Thanks to our readers for such kind words and support, it keeps us motivated and inspired!

Something New: The newest thing on my mind right now is my new car! Dan and I picked it up last night from White Rock and drove it back to Vancouver and were feeling pretty cool. I mean going from an old honda to a small SUV with AC and power windows? whaaaaaat? luxury! and we can have a conversation while we're driving on the highway because we can hear each other talking and not just the loud muffler?? this is craaaaazy.

Something Disturbing: How crazy is the bridge that collapsed in Washington last night? I was so shocked, I've driven over that bridge many, many times! I'm pretty sure that would be my worst nightmare! Thankful everyone's ok, especially my parents who drove over it only a few hours before! Crazy.

Something I'm Listening To: I finally got the Bahamas album and have had that playing back to back with She & Him V3 on repeat all week, I don't think I've really listened to anything else!

Something New: I went blonde! After years of thinking about it, I finally decided to commit to the idea of going blonde! Trying it out! Why not, nows the time! I got over my fear of when I box-dyed it in grade 7 and it turned orange and yellow, which happened to match my neon yellow and orange room at the time (have that golden photograph lying around somewhere). Bethany ended up doing a great job! Thanks B.

Something Inspiring: I was scrolling through instagram today and was super inspired by one friend in particular. It was a really sweet drawing of a buffalo that my friend Reagan from Boreal Sons (great band-check them out) drew. I just get so inspired when people make such cool art with their talents, it also made me realize how I haven't utilized that artistic side in a while! I am determined this week to build myself a desk, and use it solely for art. Drawing, painting, crafting.. it's so important to be constantly creating and pushing yourself to expand and find ways to express yourself! Everyone has a style, a way they see things, a different light in their eyes than the other. It's cool when you can show others how You view something, in your own unique way. If it comes from your heart, it will be different than anything else out there.

Something Disturbing: There are 2 men who live below us, and they sing karaoke til 3 in the morning. Then they are up at 10am, and right back at it. It's getting out of control.

Something im listening to: Elbow! I have been on a website called 8 Tracks, which is like a handcrafted internet radio that has playlists you can build or you can listen to others compilations. I have found so many good bands by typing in an artist I love, and it shows you a playlist with that artist in it and similar artists are mixed in with that playlist. It's great.

Bethany // This app is called WTHR. It's a simple and pretty weather app. I know there is a weather app alreaadyyy on the iphone, but this one looks nicer! haha.

Tegan // This app is called "A Beautiful Mess" which I am sure all of you have seen if you have instagram, because it's everywhere! The Wonderful ladies at A Beautiful Mess blog designed it and it's amaaaazing!
