A Month of Nesting // DIY Brush Stroke Throw Cushion

Our studio just got a little fall makeover but it was still needing a few homey touches. We decided that we should make some throw cushions to up the coziness, and made up this simple DIY for you to try! This is an easy and extremely cheap was to make a throw cushion from a tote bag.

  • Tote Bag - Burlap or Canvas
  • Fabric Paint
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Stuffing

Step 1: Cut off the straps of the tote bag.

Step 2: Tape off rows on your bag, to guide you while painting.

Step 3: Place paper in the bag to keep the paint from bleeding through.

Step 4: Using your fabric paint, start to paint rough squares about 1-2 inches apart in each row. Don't make your squares perfect, do some brush strokes thicker with paint than others and let the edges be uneven.

Step 5: Once the paint has dried. Stitch around the three sewn edges of the tote using your embroidery thread. We used a blanket stitch, here is a helpful tutorial. It is a very simple and quick way to make a nice looking finished edge.

Step 6: Once you have stitched the three sewn edges. Turn the tote inside out and do a straight stitch across the open side, leaving a 4 inch opening for stuffing. Turn the tote back to right side out and add the stuffing.

Step 7: Once you have stuffed your pillow, finish it off by doing the blanket stitch across the bottom seam, and you are done!
