Thrifting Tips

We love to thrift! You may have noticed in previous posts about our personal style that we usually always have an article in our outfits that is thrifted. It adds a little "adventure" to our shopping, and you can find some serious gems. The best part is you can afford to leave with everything you fall in love with! We have had a lot of friends and readers over the years ask us to take them thrifting or share our tips on "how to thrift". So we decided to go to one of our favourite local Salvation Army's together and each make an outfit just from what we could find. Here are the outfits we made along with our personal tips and secrets of the hunt.

This outfit came to a grand total of $15. Some of my best finds have been oversized sweaters or dress shirts tucked away in the mens section of the thrift store. I found these lovely boyfriend jeans in a bigger size than I would normally be looking in, which is always so good to do! I have found that if i'm looking for anything, to always look in all sizes, you never know what gem you may find tucked away in a section bigger or smaller than you would normally be. I always take a quick look through the men's section - dress shirts, tees, and sweaters. I have learned to always, always just grab a basket and throw anything in there that I think I would like, or whatever catches my eye. Try it on, if you don't love it, it will probably end up back at the thrift store so don't bother!

I am all about layering sweaters and dress shirts. There are so many funky shirts/collared t-shirts at thrift stores with really cool patterns. Don't be afraid of tees that are too bold, they always look great under a neutral cardigan or pull over sweater. I actually laughed as i picked out this blouse because it was over-the-top granny style, but it was the collar that caught my eye. It ended up being the perfect addition to layer under a simple sweater. When you're picking out dresses, always try to think of ways that you can also layer them. I didn't particularly love this dress, but it was perfect length and style for this outfit. I love finding good boots at thrift stores! It is rare to find a sturdy pair. Countless times I have bought boots that look really cool but end up falling a part a few days into wearing them. Be sure to check the soles and quality of the shoe before purchasing. It seems silly to say that because most people probably do check that, but I always get won over by how cool they look and end up wasting my money ;) .

Ok, this was a little harder being 9 months pregnant... There are very few articles of clothing at this stage that make you feel "cute". I picked this button up mens denim shirt because it was actually long and wide enough to fit around my belly, and I always love a good western style denim! Whenever I go thrifting I always find tons of silk scarves. I think they are a bit of an old lady staple, which is why you can find them in such cool retro patterns like this one, so 70's. These are a great deal because they're usually about .99 cents and you can wear them as a headscarf, belt, even as a top in the summer. I also scored big with these boots, they're brand new from Zara for $18.00. At first I walked past them because they just blended in among all of the other granny boots, but if there's anything I've learnt it's that if something has a hint of potential pick it up!

Tips //

-Don't go thrifting if you don't feel like trying things on! Best is to wear leggings, a comfy tee, and shoes you can slip on, easy for trying things on  and you can skip the change room if it's busy.

-If you don't love it in the thrift store, you're not going to love it at home. I've made that mistake too many times.

-Don't skip the pajamas/lingerie. I used to always think that rack was disgusting, and I still feel a little embarrassed when I'm looking through, but I've found some of my favourite things there. Silk robes that I'll wear over a tank and jeans, cute retro PJ's, or silk slips that can be pulled off as a slip dress with a chunky cardigan. Have an open mind!

-The mens section is great for a perfect oversized tee or sweater. For t-shirts, think of other ways you can wear them, for example, you can pull off a long baggy tee as a dress with tights and boots. Experiment! Try cutting off the sleeves or neckline!
